Canada has a reputation for being one of the most welcoming countries in the world when it comes to immigrants. As a nation built on cultures from across the globe, Canadians are proud of their mosaic of backgrounds and heritages.
In recent years, Canada has gained international recognition for other positives in the area of immigration. In a survey conducted by the Migrant Integration Policy Index, Canada took top honors for policies that encourage immigrant integration. According to the survey, Canada immigrant integration policies are among the very best in the world.
The survey placed Canada third behind Sweden and Portugal based on a variety of factors, including public education, paths to citizenship, and political engagement.
Although Canada did not score as high on immigrant political integration, it performed impressively in areas such as family reunification, the new citizenship guide, and labour markets for new immigrants. According to the survey, new arrivals to Canada have far better work opportunities than people immigrating to Europe or the United States.
Furthermore, although Canada placed third behind Sweden and Portugal, respectively, foreign-born individuals only comprise six per cent of the population in those nations. By contrast, Canada’s foreign-born population accounts for 20 per cent of the entire population.
