When you move to a new country, there are many steps you must take to settle in and begin living normal life. One of the most important first steps is obtaining medical care and coverage. Whether you need a routine checkup or you or a loved one becomes unexpectedly ill, it is important to have your health benefits in place as soon as possible.
Fortunately, as a permanent resident of Canada you are entitled to receive free medical care for nearly all medically necessary health care costs. This coverage is paid for by taxes, which are paid by all Canadian citizens and permanent residents. Although each province and territory has its own health insurance plan, the coverage is similar across the country. Ontario permanent residents are entitled to coverage under the Ontario Health Insurance Plan.
According to the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care, a permanent resident is eligible to receive a health card if he or she meets the following requirements:
- Physically live in Ontario for at least 153 days within a one-year period
- Ontario is the individual’s primary place of residence
- Physically live in Ontario for a minimum of 153 days within the first six months of establishing residency in Ontario
The federal government also extends temporary health care coverage to refugees in certain situations. Call our office to find out if you qualify for these benefits.
Do You Need to Buy Extra Health Insurance Coverage?
The provincial health care plan covers most necessary medical expenses, but it will not pay for all types of care and procedures. For this reason, you may wish to purchase additional insurance. Some additional medical-related expenses you might encounter include dental care, cosmetic procedures, and certain prescription medications. In some cases, employers offer extra health insurance coverage beyond the provincial plan.
